The Cinema Museum
On Wednesday, 30th July, event organiser Hillary Kearney took us to the historic Cinema Museum
based in the former Lambeth Workhouse.
It was here that Charlie Chaplin spent much of his childhood when his mother fell on hard times,
and the experience had its influence on his later work.
The Museum therefore has many artefacts relating to "the Little Tramp".
The Curator led us on a guided tour, explaining the history of the Workhouse itself
as well as the evolution of the cinema industry, with memorabilia dating from the 1890s to the
present day. We saw early examples of movie house hardware, from seats and signage to projectors
and sound equipment, and uniforms dating from the 1930s to the '50s, together with posters,
magazines and other publicity material.
After a break for tea/coffee and biscuits, we settled down in the small theatre to enjoy
a short program of archive film material.
